Amazon's Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power trailer set a record by gaining 257 million views in just 24 hours after its debut.

Amazon announced its new series The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power back in January of 2020, but have kept many of the other details of the series quiet. Recently, Amazon released character posters of torsos and hands without revealing any of their faces. These choices have caused a lot of buzz about the series and have kept LOTR fans interested in any new revelations of the upcoming series, so it isn't a great surprise that the first Rings of Power trailer has been so popular.

The record-breaking trailer, earning 257 million views in one day, features beautiful landscapes and promises of action, which include a young woman dangling from a snow-covered cliff, an arrow being captured by hand mid-flight, and a young voice promising viewers that there are "wonders in this world." Simply being related to the beloved Tolkien series set the trailer up for success, as many fans of the franchise were interested to see how Amazon would expand the Lord of the Rings story. While the views of the trailer are staggering, opinions about what it offers are mixed.

Lord of the Rings fans quickly shared their opinions of the trailer on social media after its release. Some of the most popular criticisms include the overuse of CGI and the series divergence from Tolkien's vision. However, some fans praised the series for its diversity and inclusion. Regardless of the fans' divided opinions on the one-minute trailer, it certainly garnered attention and set a new record for views earned on a trailer in one single day. Amazon has not commented on viewers' criticisms yet.

Amazon must have something worthwhile up their sleeve for the series, as it reportedly cost them over a billion dollars to create. The series, a prequel to the Peter Jackson films, is already dividing the Lord of the Rings fan base, and it will be interesting to see if opinions change or strengthen when the series drops later this year.

The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power will be available exclusively on Amazon Prime on September 2, 2022.
