Ark Survival Evolved developer Studio Wildcard announces plans for a mobile version of the popular survival title, which will be free-to-play on iOS and Android.

p>Get ready to tame dinosaurs and explore an island all from a phone or tablet with the arrival of ARK: Survival Evolved on mobile devices. According to publisher Studio Wildcard, the mobile version of the game will be released this spring.

Players will be able to experience Ark: Survival Evolved's universe in all its prehistoric glory, as the mobile version will not be a stand-alone spinoff, but a "full online survival experience contained in the PC and console versions," according to a release from Studio Wildcard. Features that can be expected to show up in the mobile version include:

  • Full exploration
  • More than 80 dinosaurs and prehistoric beasts to tame and train
  • Tribe mechanics
  • Crafting
  • Building

Studio Wildcard announced that the mobile version of ARK: Survival Evolved will be "designed and developed" by War Drum Studios, the same studio responsible for bringing Rockstar Games projects like Grand Theft Auto to mobile devices.

This isn't the first time Studio Wildcard has toyed with the idea of portable prehistoric exploration and dinosaur taming. A few months back, the developer said the Nintendo Switch was a "great platform" and even thought ARK: Survival Evolved could be a good fit for the hybrid console. It seems that, for now, the studio has turned to mobile devices to satisfy this desire for portability.

Following a closed beta of ARK on March 15, War Drum and Studio Wildcard are planning to launch the game on both iOS and Android this spring. Since its time as a Steam Early Access title in June 2015 and official release in August 2017, the game has amassed sales of over 9 million copies and more than 13 million players across all platforms (Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One).

The game is also making a splash in the world of virtual reality. Developed by Snail Games with creative consultation by Studio Wildcard, ARK Park is a VR spinoff game that will release this year on March 22 for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PSVR. This game will allow players to "freely traverse the grounds without any restrictions whatsoever."

ARK: Survival Evolved's journey has been one of growth and adaptation; the game is even expected to see a third expansion this year. While there is no exact date on the announcement page, ARK mobile is expected to release this spring.
