Why Backwards Compatible Feature Won’t Include PS3, PS2, and PS1
There’s been a lot of buzz about the PlayStation 5, especially regarding its backward compatibility with games from older consoles. While Sony confirmed that PS4 titles will run on the PS5, it remains unclear whether or not games from the PS1, PS2, or PS3 will be playable without using the PlayStation Now streaming service. Developer Marc-Andre Jutras, who worked on *Hellpoint*, recently explained why PS5 might not support games from all previous generations.
Technical Challenges of Backward Compatibility
Jutras sympathized with gamers who don’t understand why backward compatibility is such an issue. He pointed out that if there are emulators available for older consoles, it doesn’t make sense why a powerful modern system like the PS5 wouldn’t be able to run these games, even with a few glitches.
“As a gamer, it’s frustrating. The PS5 is so powerful, it should handle PS1, PS2, and PS3 games easily,” said Jutras. “But it’s not always that simple.”
Licensing and Legal Roadblocks
According to Jutras, the real issue lies not in the hardware, but in the legalities surrounding backward compatibility. Many older games are tied to licenses that are difficult to track down, especially for companies that no longer exist. This makes it hard for Sony to bring every old title back to life on the new system.
“Some games are tangled up in licensing issues,” Jutras explained. “And for a lot of titles, the companies that made them no longer exist, which makes it even harder to secure the rights.”
What Gamers Want from PS5
Jutras shared that many gamers expect backward compatibility to be a given feature, especially for a console as advanced as the PS5. With no official confirmation from Sony yet, many PlayStation fans are holding off on upgrading until they know for sure whether their older games will be supported.
“I just hope backward compatibility becomes standard,” Jutras said. “Players want it, and it would make the PS5 an even more attractive upgrade.”
