There was a time when Doom 2016 was likely going to be something different, and some new images have come to the fore showing what could have been.

p>For many, the sight of Doom being rebooted in 2016 with Eternal following up a few years later has enabled the franchise to be welcomed back to the limelight with open arms. As one of the most important FPS games of the 1990s, if not of all time, id Software's original games helped establish the genre, inspiring shooters to this day. However, there was a time when the new Doom game was going to be something different to what was launched, and some new images have been doing the rounds which show what some of the characters were going to look like.

A few days ago, a post on Twitter by user Crispies, a self-professed lover of Doom, displayed three renderings which showed a number of variants of the resistance soldiers that would have been in the game before it was scrapped in favor of the reboot. Each image shows a different character in gritty armor and with what appears to be warpaint on their faces. According to the tweet, the body shots were produced by Blur Studios, which has worked on things like Quake 3 Revolution and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2.

Footage from the cancelled Doom 4 project was released back in December 2020, which showed what the game would have been like had the developer seen the project through. The animation test shots and gameplay sequences show something not too dissimilar to Doom 2016 in terms of monster designs. However, some of the action footage, which features a number of marines, gives it a modern FPS look in line with things like Call of Duty, only grittier and with hell demons.

As interesting as the new images are, many fans would agree that what was eventually released in 2016 was stunning overall. As one of the most brutal video games in existence, the Doom reboot, along with its subsequent sequel, have breathed new life into the series. But many will wonder what could have been had Doom 4 kept its original vision.

As awesome and modern run and gun games go, Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal have been highly praised by critics and fans alike, with some considering the latter superior to the former. Of course, the original id Software games from the 90s will always be fondly remembered, with many continuing to play and mod the classic shooters. It will also be interesting to see where the studio takes the series next.

Doom Eternal is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
