It may seem inconceivable to long time players, but this year RuneScape turns 20 years old. One of the most important and noteworthy massively multiplayer online role-playing games of all time, fans both old and new will have plenty to look forward to.
Phil Mansell, Jagex CEO, has announced that to celebrate this historic milestone, this entire year will be dedicated to honoring both the past and future of RuneScape. A large in-game event, called The Grand Party, launches today as players can also look forward to multi part 20th anniversary quests, new collectibles and a brand new epic Elder Gods story arc will unfold all through out 2021. He also went on to announce the full mobile game leaving early access/beta and launching officially on devices this year, a hardcover art retrospective book, vinyl record sound track recordings, and brand new anniversary content for Old School RuneScape.
Released 20 years ago today on January 4, 2001, Jagex has created a year long celebration that is sure to attract both old and new school RuneScape players alike. Releasing large amounts of in game content, launching fully on new platforms, and a bounty of new physical media ensures that this long time fanbase is going to have a tremendous year long celebration.
By honoring the past and looking towards modern accessibility such as mobile and Steam platforms, RuneScape may very well be in for one of the best eras of its 20 year long journey. It will be interesting to see if Jagex can not only reignite the older or lapsed fanbase, but attract new players into the fantastic RPG world the developers have so lovingly spent years creating and expanding.
RuneScape is available now on PC and Mobile.
