There are a lot of awesome Local Co-Op & Split-Screen games available on PS Now. Here's a look at some of the best.

p>There are a lot of fantastic games to play on PS Now with many of them offering up engaging single-player storylines and experiences. Sometimes, though, it's more fun to play through a game with friends and it's even better if the game can be played locally or split-screen. Online games have made massive strides in recent years but it's hard to deny how entertaining it is to play through a riveting cooperative experience with friends in the same room.

Thankfully, there are a lot of great local cooperative and split-screen experiences for players to enjoy on PS Now, with a slew of Indie titles and triple-A releases to choose from. To help players get a better grasp on some of the best local co-op and split-screen games on PS Now, we've compiled this list of some of the better offerings on Sony's popular platform.

In June 2022, Sony will be releasing a new tier-based subscription service that combines PS Plus and PS Now.

Overcooked 2

Platform PS4
Original Release Date August 7, 2018
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 4

Overcooked 2 will test even the sturdiest of friendships. Sure, losing to a friend in a game of Mario Kart 8 can be frustrating and might lead to the occasional outburst, but that is nothing compared to the high pressure of running a restaurant.

As orders roll in, players must work together to remain on top of everything. Poor communication will lead to wasted seconds and pointless actions, along with perhaps a touch of anger. However, when everyone syncs up and the kitchen begins to operate like a well-oiled machine, the outcome is pure magic.

Magicka 2

Platform PS4
Original Release Date May 26, 2015
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 4

Magicka 2 is a power fantasy in the sense that it gives players the ammunition to create spells that could impress the likes of Gandalf, Shang Tsung, and Doctor Strange. While players have the tools, executing them is hardly an easy task as it requires carefully pressing the right buttons to combine magic types, and these input sequences are long. Testing as the game's learning curve can be, Magicka 2 rewards the committed with satisfying wizardry destruction.

Although possible solo, Magicka 2 is really meant to be played with a few friends as enemies hit hard and without remorse. In a group of four, players can spread overwhelming and delightful mayhem across the land. It is a whole lot of fun.

Team Sonic Racing

Platform PS4
Original Release Date May 2, 2019
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 4

Unlike the Transformed games, Team Sonic Racing pushes teamwork to the forefront. Unsurprisingly, the game offers local split-screen co-op, and this mode arguably brings out the best in the kart racer. Supporting up to four players for its split-screen functionality, the process for starting a local race is straightforward and simple.

Team Sonic Racing stresses that finishing first does not guarantee victory; the goal is to make sure that the team outperforms the competition. Therefore, racers have to work together to make sure they collectively take the top spot.

Victor Vran: Overkill Edition

Platform PS4
Original Release Date June 6, 2017
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 2

Introduced to PS Now in October 2021, Victor Vran: Overkill Edition might not seem like an obvious candidate for co-op gameplay, but the action RPG delivers a fun multiplayer experience. Victor Vran delivers reflex-based real-time combat that prioritizes skill above stats, although the latter is hardly ignored either.

An enjoyable solo romp, Victor Vran's co-op option spices things up by adding an element of coordination to proceedings. Suddenly, it is not just about building the most destructive version of Victor Vran, as the goal is to form a pair of hunters who complement each other.

Alienation

Platform PS4
Original Release Date June 6, 2017
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 4

A twin-stick shooter, Alienation was a blast when it came out in 2016 and time has done little to hurt the game's appeal. Earth has fallen at the hands of an alien invasion, so it is up to the players to turn the tide by doing a lot of shooting and killing.

RELATED: Underrated Shooters That Came Out In The Last 5 Years

Alienation supports single-player and online co-op, both of which are quite fun, although the latter isn't all that active nowadays. However, the shooter is arguably at its best when played in local co-op since this allows the team to coordinate better. There are four characters with individual classes, each of which has its own strengths and weaknesses. Alienation is explosive, incorporates engaging RPG elements, and offers quite a steep challenge.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

Platform PS4
Original Release Date March 24, 2015
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 4

Local co-op was not available in Borderlands 2, but Borderlands: The Handsome Collection fixed that by making it possible for up to four users to split a screen. Containing Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, this collection offers 75+ hours of gameplay, and that's only if a group focuses solely on the games' main stories. With all the side quests included within these campaigns, it could easily take more than 150+ hours to complete both games.

Borderlands 2 is the stronger entry of the two, and it comes with an effective storyline and an unforgettable villain. Although the gunplay feels a bit dated in both of these titles, co-op helps paper over the cracks brought on by age.

Moving Out

Platform PS4
Original Release Date April 28, 2021
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 4

It is often said that true friends will always lend a hand on moving days, and this game is built upon that concept. Moving Out takes one of the least enjoyable parts of life and, somehow, makes it entertaining while still retaining the frustration associated with the act.

This local co-op game has a simple concept: players have to work together to move furniture into vans without destroying everything in the process. The premise might be simple, but the task is anything but easy. A fun party game, Moving Out will test friendships and, hopefully, produce a few laughs along the way.

Guacamelee

Platform PS3
Original Release Date April 9th, 2013
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 2

When players think of a good cooperative experience, it's possible they're only considering triple-A titles or high-budget games. But the truth is that there are loads of fantastic indie adventures available in 2021, with some of them offering up wildly fun local-co-op gameplay.

A great example of this is Guacamelee, a unique and comical hybrid Metroidvania brawler originally released in 2013. The story follows a once-prominent luchador through a series of dangerous skeleton-filled areas on a quest to save his beloved. Players can enjoy a local-co-op experience with addictive side-scrolling gameplay, great 2D visuals, and an engrossing story.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2

Platform PS3
Original Release Date March 18, 2015
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 2

The Resident Evil series has always been known for its creepy zombie-infested horror gameplay and interesting Umbrella Corp-centric storylines. For the most part, the franchise was always a single-player affair, but that all changed with Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6. These titles were more action-packed than their predecessors, a change that was met with mixed reviews from some fans.

RELATED: Common Misconceptions About Resident Evil

Unbeknownst to some, they weren't the only cooperative experiences in the Resident Evil franchise. One of these releases, Resident Evil: Revelations 2, has a lot to offer those looking for a solid split-screen Resident Evil adventure. It's dark, gritty, and encompasses the "fear" of the release that some felt was missing in the action-packed Resident Evil 5. It features an engaging story and unique mechanics for each player character.

Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition

Platform PS4
Original Release Date March 4, 2014
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 2

Housemarque has a couple of great local co-op games under its belt, and Dead Nation ranks up there with Alienation. Besides including the Road of Devastation DLC, The Apocalypse Edition does not change too much from the original PS3 version, which works in its favor since the base game is fantastic. A top-down shooter, Dead Nation throws hordes of zombies at the well-armed players, and the game offers variety and customization.

Twin-stick shooters are seemingly made for cooperative play, and this release exemplifies this fact. Deep, challenging, and replayable, Dead Nation is a lot of fun regardless of whether someone is facing the end of days solo or with a friend.

Totally Reliable Delivery Service

Platform PS4
Original Release Date March 31, 2020
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 4

Considering PS Now's November 2021 additions also consisted of Mafia: Definitive Edition, Celeste, and Final Fantasy 9, Totally Reliable Delivery Service might struggle to stand out from the crowd. Although possible solo, this party game basically demands to be played with friends.

Up to four players can come together to complete deliveries in a sandbox setting. Sounds easy, doesn't it? Well, Totally Reliable Delivery Service's physics are wonky. When the simple act of walking can lead to disaster, carrying fragile boxes becomes quite a challenge.

Metal Slug 3

Platform PS4
Original Release Date March 24, 2015
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 2

A masterpiece in the run and gun genre, Metal Slug 3 provides non-stop mayhem while still managing to feel totally in control. It is an action movie in video game form, and while its real home will forever be arcades, Metal Slug 3 is just as much of a blast at home.

RELATED: Every Mainline Metal Slug Game, Ranked

The PS4 version does not mess with perfection, opting to simply provide access to SNK's glorious side-scrolling shooter. Metal Slug 3 supports 2-player co-op, and this is one cartoonish explosion fest that is made even better with a friend.

LittleBigPlanet 3

Platform PS3
Original Release Date November 18, 2014
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 4

Those looking for a fun and less stressful platforming game will find a lot to love with the charming release, LittleBigPlanet 3. The third mainline installment (8th installment overall) in the LittleBigPlanet series offered up some interesting new mechanics for local-co-op players to enjoy. Three new characters were introduced alongside Sackboy, each with unique mechanics.

These gameplay elements helped to create a much better cooperative experience where players can "feel as if they're important" to the progression in each level. With a lot of user-generated content to explore, LittleBigPlanet 3 is a great local-co-op adventure with a ton of replayability.

Broforce

Platform PS4
Original Release Date March 1st, 2015
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 4

Players wanting a little more action in their local-co-op Indie release should turn to Broforce, a testosterone-infused action-platforming-shooter with a variety of characters and a slew of levels to conquer alone or with friends.

The title has seen an array of updates over the years and features over 20 characters for players to choose from. With a multitude of weapons, imposing bosses to slay, and a killer soundtrack, Broforce is easily one of the most entertaining platforming local-co-op experiences on PS Now.

Death Squared

Platform PS4
Original Release Date March 14, 2017
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 4

SMG Studio's Death Squared is an intriguing puzzle game that pushes cooperative play to the forefront. Split into levels (or tests), players have to direct their colored cubes towards their associated square. Each level comes packed with traps and challenges, and although the game can be played solo, Death Squared shines brighter in co-op.

Players need to coordinated to help each other reach their end goal, and communication is key. Puzzle games tend to be isolating experiences, but Death Squared flips that completely on its head to create one of the genre's more memorable modern releases. It is charming, difficult, and even tells a decent story for a puzzle game.

Spelunky

Platform PS3
Original Release Date August 27, 2013
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 4

Those who want a punishing puzzle-based platforming experience will find a gruesome procedurally generated grind with Spelunky. The "story" follows a cave-exploring protagonist as he makes his way through a series of dangerous traps and enemies on a quest to collect as much treasure as possible.

RELATED: Spelunky Classic: Best Mods

Unfortunately for players, the "dungeons" are ever-changing and death can come quickly to those that aren't paying attention to each and every pitfall waiting. This game is a blast with friends, offering up better strategy elements and opportunities for those playing together.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince

Platform PS4
Original Release Date October 8, 2019
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 4

The Trine series has always been known for its engaging cooperative gameplay but some players were disappointed with the third installment in the series, noting that it took away from a lot of the gameplay elements that made the series such a fun local-co-op romp. Trine 4 aimed to set things right by once again giving players the puzzle-solving, side-scrolling, action-heavy platforming content they'd come to know and love.

While some players still regard Trine 2 as the best in the series, there is so much to appreciate with the fourth installment, including its stunningly beautiful visuals and environments. The gameplay is also better than ever.

Fury Unleashed

Platform PS4
Original Release Date May 8, 2020
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 2

A roguelite shooter reminiscent of arcade classics like Metal Slug, Fury Unleashed permits players to live out their dreams of being comic book heroes. Once a character is created, players jump into randomly generated levels set across four formats, battling through hordes of enemies as they earn currency, execute combos, and discover new weapons.

These types of games are repetitive by design, and a surefire way to lessen this component is to bring along a friend. Fury Unleashed is short, explosive, and controls well; PS Now owners should not ignore this indie title as it guarantees a fun time.

Samurai Warriors 4

Platform PS4
Original Release Date November 19, 2014
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 2

OK, Warriors games are not for everyone. Some people consider these hack and slash titles to be incredibly monotonous, while others find them to be cathartic. For those who fall within the latter category, Samurai Warriors 4 is the best Musou option on PS Now.

RELATED: One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 – Best Warriors Spin-Off Games, Ranked

Omega Force's action romp is unapologetically over-the-top, fast-paced, and packed to the brim with content. Along with online multiplayer, Samurai Warriors 4 supports horizontal split-screen co-op, so friends can enjoy taking on armies of faceless enemies together.

Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends is also on PS Now and a solid option for people looking for a Musou game.

The Metronomicon: Slay The Dance Floor

Platform PS4
Original Release Date August 29, 2017
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 2

A fun mashup of the rhythm and RPG genre, The Metronomicon: Slay the Dance Floor works far better than it has any right to. Monsters are taking over dance floors across the world, forcing heroes to take to the battlefield so they can bust a move.

Battles consist of four characters going up against monsters, and players will need to match their inputs with the beat. The local co-op splits the team between two players, making battles more manageable. There is no other co-op game like The Metronomicon: Slay the Dance Floor on PS Now.

LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

Platform PS4
Original Release Date November 14, 2014
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 2

LEGO games are reliable picks for 2-player local co-op, and the third entry in the Batman franchise is no exceptions. Beyond Gotham is the biggest adventure in the Dark Knight-themed series, and as its title suggests, the game brings in a massive roster of characters from across the DC Universe.

Beyond Gotham is one of the more divisive entries in the series, mainly due to its celebrity cameos and uneven story, along with just plain old franchise fatigue. Still, DC fans should get a chuckle from messing around with the game's characters and locations.

Vikings: Wolves Of Midgard

Platform PS4
Original Release Date March 24, 2017
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 2

Diablo's shadow looms far and wide over the isometric action-RPG genre. While Blizzard's franchise might not be on PS Now, Vikings: Wolves of Midgard serves as a respectable alternative. Except for its Norse influences, a setting that was more unique in 2017 prior to the launch of God of War, Vikings doesn't deviate too far from the beaten path for this type of game. The kill, loot, and recycle loop continues to be repeated for a reason – it works.

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard supports local and online co-op, and the journey is far more enjoyable with a few friends who are willing to synergize their builds.

Darksiders: Genesis

Platform PS4
Original Release Date February 14, 2020
How Many Supported Players for Local Co-Op 2

The Darksiders series was well-known for its Legend of Zelda-style gameplay, so it came as a surprise to many gamers to hear about the release of Darksiders: Genesis. The top-down helped to evolve the franchise by offering up some great hack-and-slash mechanics and blending them with some very welcome cooperative gameplay.

The finished product is a (roughly) 15-hour long adventure that players can enjoy alone or with a friend, featuring a small variety of characters, some great puzzle design, fluid combat, and beautiful visuals. This is definitely one of the better cooperative experiences currently available on PS Now.
