Stylish samurai game Trek to Yomi's new trailer shows off the opening minutes of the side-scrolling slasher and officially reveals its release date.

p>Trek to Yomi's reveal during last summer's E3 showed off a stylish samurai game inspired by classic Japanese cinema and legendary filmmakers like Akira Kurosawa. With the recent reveal of Trek to Yomi's star-studded voice cast and following in the footsteps of recent highly successful samurai games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Ghost of Tsushima, Devolver Digital and developer Flying Wild Hog have been teasing fans with new information and gameplay. Now, a recent trailer has officially confirmed the release date for the stylish side-scroller.

While Trek to Yomi's reveal last summer looks to ride the wave of massively popular samurai games in recent years, Devolver Digital had only previously given a vague release date for the highly-anticipated title. A trailer in December confirmed that Trek to Yomi would be a Day 1 title for Xbox Game Pass on its release and last month's State of Play broadcast narrowed the release window down to Spring of this year. Now, Devolver Digital's newest extended trailer not only gives fans an in-depth look at Trek to Yomi's opening minutes but also confirms its launch in a month's time.

An extended gameplay trailer released Tuesday morning depicts the first fifteen minutes of Trek to Yomi showing off plenty of scenes introduced in previous trailers, as well as giving brief glimpses into Trek's gameplay. The trailer depicts the young swordsman Hiroki slicing and stabbing his way through waves of samurai as he fights his way to his ravaged village with both the title of the video and a teaser at the end officially confirming that Trek to Yomi will release one month from today on May 5.

While most of the trailer is portrayed with little in the way of UI, preserving the classic Japanese film aesthetic of Trek to Yomi, occasional pop-ups appear throughout the opening stages to give players a look at the game's combo systems. While many of the enemies are dispatched by wildly swinging into them, the game does feature combo moves like the "Stunning Combination" for greater visual effect, as well as flashy finishing moves complete with black-and-white blood sprays.

While Trek to Yomi's visuals help to give the game a wholly unique visual appeal, the game will look to carve out its own unique niche in a genre that has been inundated with high-profile titles in recent years. Between Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima and FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, samurai games have seen a major boom in recent years with some of the biggest developers in the industry creating gorgeous cinematic titles. Trek to Yomi's black-and-white visuals and clear inspiration from the samurai flicks of old should help to stand out from its contemporaries.

Trek to Yomi will release on May 5 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
